Primary responsibilities include detailed and proficient work designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the security systems that protect the credit union’s computer systems and data. Also responsible for analyzing data to recognize security threats and creating automated proactive measures to detect and prevent data loss.  Maintains and supports data protection tools and monitoring systems. This position will work closely with the Security Operations Center, Security Architect, and other members of the Ascend Information Technology team to support the overall mission of the company and its long-term strategic business initiatives.


  • Monitor computer networks for security issues.
  • Investigate security breaches and other cyber security incidents.
  • Install security measures and operate software to protect systems and information infrastructure, including firewalls and data encryption programs.
  • Document security breaches and assess the damage they cause.
  • Work with Security Operations Center to uncover network vulnerabilities.
  • Update the credit union’s incident response and disaster recovery plans
  • Verify the security of third-party vendors and collaborate with them to meet security requirements
  • Fix detected vulnerabilities to maintain a high-security standard.
  • Develop company-wide best practices for IT security.
  • Participate in penetration testing exercises.
  • Help colleagues install security software and understand information security management.
  • Research security enhancements and make recommendations to management.
  • Stay up-to-date on information technology trends and security standards.
  • Provide support for data protection on computers, servers, storage systems and network infrastructure. This individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure data protection is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the implementation of new technologies and providing skills training to other IT staff.
  • Participate in security reviews of applications, computers, peripherals, servers, storage systems, cloud solutions, and infrastructure to ensure data is protected.
  • Act as a contributor or at times a lead engineer for enterprise level strategic projects, meeting milestone deadlines, and accomplishing project action items.
  • Ensure that proper operating procedures are adhered to during the full lifecycle of all security systems including documentation, implementation, maintenance, monitoring, support, refresh/upgrades, and decommission.
  • Comply with corporate incident management, change management, and problem management processes; monitor assignment and completion of efforts documented in these systems; and properly escalate issues to management. This role may serve as a point of contact for interactions with vendors for issue remediation and root cause analysis.
  • Installs various types of software on a variety of hardware platforms including system updates, patches and configuration changes. Operating systems include Linux, Windows Server 2012/2016/2019 and ESX 6.5
  • Analyze data from monitoring systems to recognize trends and create proactive solutions to prevent recurring issues. Monitoring solutions include SolarWinds, Manage Engine, Watchdog, and notices from MSSP.



  • Four year degree in Information Technology/Computer Science or equivalent technical training


  • Minimum 4 years of experience in information security and incident response
  • Minimum 4 years of experience with computer network penetration testing and techniques.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience supporting data loss prevention tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Industry certifications such as CISSP, CISA, Security+, CEH, or GSEC preferred.
  • Understanding of firewalls, proxies, SIEM, antivirus, and IDPS concepts.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate network vulnerabilities and explain how to avoid them.
  • Understanding of patch management with the ability to deploy patches in a timely manner while understanding business impact.
  • Experience securing a Microsoft server environment including Server 2012/2016/2019
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects/tasks concurrently; and prioritize requests and complete assignments within an estimated timeframe; and organize, schedule, and coordinate a variety of activities and projects.
  • Efficient at troubleshooting complex problems.
  • Must have the ability to learn new software and hardware packages and adapt to changes in technology.
  • Must be self-starter and be able to use own judgment to undertake activities with minimal supervision. Must be work independently and as a team member. 
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all those contacted during the course of work.
  • Must be able to carry lift and carry boxes containing computers components, printer paper, etc.
  • Hours may be unpredictable because of unforeseen problems arising, updates, etc. 
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required. 
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license.
